The Grudge reboot is Hollywood’s latest attempt at trying to cash in on an established franchise. The film is scheduled for a January 3, 2020 release day. While I was not too excited by the first photos released from the film, I am extremely excited to learn that the reboot received an R rating by MPAA.
The Grudge (2020) is the first film in the franchise to receive an R rating. The MPAA designated the R rating for disturbing violence and bloody images, terror, and some language. Hopefully, Hollywood gets it right.
The film has been in development since 2013. Initially, The Grudge was going to be a reboot completely. It was going to ignore the events of The Grudge 3 (2009) and abandon the whole Saeki family story.
The director of Hatchet, Adam Green, was going to direct the film, but he dropped out to focus on another project.
Nicolas Pesce is set to direct. He wrote the screenplay based on a story by Jeff Buhler and Takashi Shimizu. The Grudge stars Lin Shaye, Andrea Riseborough, Betty Gilpin, John Cho, Demian Bichir, and William Sadler. Junko Bailey will be the seventh actress to portray Kayako in the franchise.
