Variety is reporting that HBO is in the process of developing the highly acclaimed comic book series Watchmen into a series. This is actually the cable giant’s second attempt at a series, based on the works of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons; HBO pulled the plug on a Watchmen series mid-development in 2014. Hopefully, the project will gain momentum from Damon Lindelof, who is being brought on board to develop the show following the end of his term with The Leftovers.
Premiering in 1985, “Watchmen” was a serious-minded deconstruction of superhero comics loosely inspired by characters from the Charlton Comics library, which were owned by DC. Set in a universe in which the appearance of costumed heroes in the mid-20th Century had altered the course of history — leading to U.S. victory in Vietnam and a Nixon presidency that stretched into the mid-1980s — “Watchmen” followed a group of crime fighters investigating the murder of one of their own. In the process, those characters — including Doctor Manhattan, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, and Rorschach — uncover a conspiracy with enormous implications. HBO declined to comment on the project.

The article makes it clear that this is a complete do-over with no connection to the 2009 feature film directed by Zack Snyder; that film starred Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, and Carla Gugino. Check out the trailer and synopsis below.
Official Synopsis: In an alternate 1985 America, costumed superheroes are part of everyday life. When one of his former comrades is murdered, masked vigilante Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) uncovers a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his retired associates, only one of which has true powers, Rorschach glimpses a far-reaching conspiracy involving their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the world’s future.
