When I heard that Darren Aronofsky’s mother! described as “divisive” following its world premiere, I expected violence and viscera with explorations of shocking taboos. The fact that the film was nothing of the sort isn’t a bad thing per se; I enjoy being challenged and having preconceived expectations obliterated. Still, there’s something about the film that’s really getting under people’s skin—and not in a good way. While the film has several violent moments, these are brief; the film is primarily lush and beautiful and much less dreadful than the world Aronofsky created for Requiem for a Dream. So, what exactly is the problem with mother!?
