It looks like Andy Muschietti’s IT is on track to be dubbed the best horror movie of 2017—if not the best of the 21st Century so far. While it’s not being universally praised, IT is bringing moviegoers out in record numbers. While nostalgia is a key component of the film’s success, there’s an element of fantasy that appeals to those outside of horror circles, giving IT a more mainstream appeal. Ironically, these fantasy elements are the most difficult for hardcore horror fans to reconcile, as they seem to dilute terror by demanding an extreme suspension of disbelief.
As terrifying as Pennywise (played by Bill Skarsgård) is, his powers are so vast, he becomes unrealistic. The idea that an entity can transform into any physicality at will is simply preposterous—or is it? Our friends at The Hybrid Networks are launching a new series: The Hybrid Theory. They’ll attempt to explain the fantastic powers and abilities of our favorite film characters using gold old-fashioned science.
Warning: Below There Be Spoilers!
What if Pennywise has pigment changing abilities? What if IT is actually a collection of atoms that can pull limitless energy from the physical environment in order to become any shape or size? What if Pennywise is merely an illusion caused by a pathogen the creature emits? These possibilities are explored in the video below. While there are no definitive answers, it poses some interesting theories that just might make IT more realistic, and therefore legitimately horrifying.
