The Blackcoat’s Daughter is, hands down, one of my favorite horror movies of 2017 so far. I found Oz Perkin’s film to be uniquely engrossing and unnerving with complicated twists and turns and disturbing undertones. The film’s leads, Emma Roberts, Kiernan Shipka, and Lucy Boynton, each give fantastic performances as young women with harrowing connections to an all-girls, private religious high school. The film didn’t terrify me in the traditional sense, but it affected me deeply and left me devastated.

I’d like to say that my feelings about The Blackcoat’s Daughter are universal; while the film is getting mad praise from indie horror fans, others have called it confusing and slow. I can understand those feelings, as the film subverts the traditional twist-ending maneuver. Instead of pulling the rug out from under us at the end of the 3rd Act, the film’s twist dawns like a slow revelation, like a haunting suspicion that turns out to be worse than we expected.
