WARNING: This article contains spoilers for both Unbreakable (2000) and Split (which is still in theaters).
The “big twist” of M. Night Shyamalan’s Split (currently setting box office records and earning major critical accolades) is really more of a reveal, one that puts the film into a larger context. Rather than tip-toe around plot-points and spoilers, I let the boys from WhatCulture.com give you the scoop in the video below. Needless to say, there is a connection to 2000’s Unbreakable.
If there is an Unbreakable 2, will this be part of an over-arching Shyamalanian Universe? If so, is there any chance we could see an adult Cole Sear, the star of The Sixth Sense played by Haley Joel Osment? In the context of Unbreakable and Split, Cole’s “curse” (the ability to see ghosts) could actually be considered a super power. He’d make the perfect sidekick for Unbreakable’s David Dunn (played by Bruce Willis), using his spirit communication skills to track down fugitive murderers.
Time will tell! Check out trailers of Unbreakable and Spilt below.
Official Synopsis: David Dunn (Bruce Willis) is the sole survivor of a devastating train wreck. Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) is a mysterious stranger who offers a bizarre explanation as to why David escaped without a single scratch — an explanation which threatens to change David’s family and his life forever.
Official Synopsis: Three teenagers, friends Claire and Marcia, and outsider Casey, are kidnapped by “Dennis”, one of the 23 split personalities inhabiting the body of Kevin Wendell Crumb, and held captive in an underground cellar. Kevin is a victim of childhood abuse, with severe dissociative identity disorder.
