Yesterday brought the devastating (to some) news that Andrew Lincoln will be leaving The Walking Dead at some point during Season 9 (which is currently filming in Georgia). As the main character for almost a decade, this will truly mark a new phase in the show’s evolution—if it survives, that is.
Fans nervous about the imminent departure of Rick Grimes will take little comfort in the knowledge that another main character is being pushed into the background. We’re talking about one of the show’s most powerful and inspiring female protagonists, Maggie Green, phenomenally portrayed by Lauren Cohan.
In late February, we announced that Cohan had accepted a major role in the ABC drama pilot Whiskey Cavalier (link above); this news led many to hypothesize that Maggie’s time on The Walking Dead is limited—and it looks like they were right. While we should be lucky she hasn’t been eliminated outright, Cohan’s diminished participation will feel like a second gut-punch to the show’s most devoted fans.
Lauren Cohan… will film only six episodes of the series. Cohan, who plays Maggie, opted to exit the highly rated AMC drama and booked the lead in ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier after her efforts to renegotiate a new deal to stay on The Walking Dead went south. After ABC picked up Whiskey Cavalier to series for a midseason bow, it closed the door on Cohan’s full-time return to the series — even if she had closed a new deal. AMC declined comment.
So what do you think about the imminent departures of both Rick Grimes and Maggie Greene? Will the show survive much longer? Let’s discuss.
