Stephen King is nothing if not vocal about what he likes and doesn’t like. His criticism of everything from pop culture to the current Presidential administration has almost become legendary and he has expressed his views on a new topic: the new Child’s Play film.
The original Child’s Play, penned by Don Mancini and directed by Tom Holland, told the story of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, played by Brad Dourif who then voiced the doll, transferring his soul into a Good Guy Doll and the subsequent terror that he created for young Andy Barclay and his single working mother Karen while trying to transfer his soul into Andy’s body. The film launched 6 sequels and doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon with a TV series in the works for SyFy in 2020 which will act as a sequel to Cult of Chucky, continuing that arm of the franchise.
The remake that came out this year changed quite a few aspects of the origin of Chucky and was met with a split audience because of it.
This is where Stephen King comes in.
Recently, King was asked by Entertainment Weekly to give his suggestions for the Halloween season and he said that people should check out the new Child’s Play remake. He said he didn’t watch it in theaters because he figured it would be “another warmed-over sequel”. Upon seeing it however he began to gush over the acting, script and overall gruesomeness of the film.
He went on to say: “Mark Hamill does the voice of Chucky and I just f*&!ing loved that movie.”
The Child’s Play remake did fairly well at the box office but there has been no announcement about a sequel being in the works for the film.
