J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company are a sneaky bunch. Earlier this year, they shocked and surprised Horror Freaks by dropping a Cloverfield sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane, with almost zero advanced notice. The result was an intense surge in interest and nostalgia, a combination for momentum that translated into box office and critical success.
The secretive crew did it again; it was recently announced that a film called God Particle would be the third film in the Cloverfield franchise, and we won’t have to wait long to see it. The film is deep in production and slated for theatrical release on February 24th.
God Particle lead actor David Oyelowo recently sat down with the good folks at The Wrap to discuss what it’s like working on a film with such a rich and complicated backstory:
“Every single day we were on that set we were agog with the inventiveness and innovation, between the technology, the story and the audacity of what we were trying to accomplish. It’s an incredibly exciting and innovative piece of storytelling. It’s incredibly surprising.”
Official Synopsis: A shocking discovery forces a team of astronauts aboard a space station to fight for survival while their reality has been altered.
In Cloverfield (released in 2008): As a group of New Yorkers (Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, Odette Yustman) enjoy a going-away party, little do they know that they will soon face the most terrifying night of their lives. A creature the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Using a handheld video camera, the friends record their struggle to survive as New York crumbles around them.
In 10 Cloverfield Lane (released earlier this year): After surviving a car accident, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up to find herself in an underground bunker with two men. Howard (John Goodman) tells her that a massive chemical attack has rendered the air unbreathable, and their only hope of survival is to remain inside. Despite the comforts of home, Howard’s controlling and menacing nature makes Michelle want to escape. After taking matters into her own hands, the young woman finally discovers the truth about the outside world.
