With rumors swirling of major character deaths in advance of The Walking Dead’s mid-season finale, fan conjecture is running wild. Will it be Morgan (Lennie James)? Eugene (Josh McDermitt)? Daryl (Norman Reedus)? As Season 7 came to a close in 2016, many were postulating that Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) would be meeting the Reaper, as the actor had been accepted at college this year—and his contract is up.

When we got a glimpse of Carl in the “time jump” scene in Episode 100, Mercy, however, it seemed to suggest that Carl isn’t going anywhere anytime soon (as we seemed to be looking at least several years into the future). But savvy TWD fans have been replaying those critical time jump moments, and not everyone is convinced that Carl is the long-haired character we see only briefly.
Have a look at the scene below; it looks like Carl and it sounds like Carl—but we never see his face.
This wouldn’t be the first time producers of TWD have dropped some skillful misdirection. And there are other reasons fans are predicting Carl’s imminent demise: We previously mentioned Riggs’ college aspirations, but paparazzi staking out the Alexandria set in Georgia claim a major battle scene was shot last August—one that saw Carl covered in blood. There are also reports that Riggs has not been seen on set since.
