The sequel to Blumhouse’s 2013 cyber-horror hit Unfriended hit theaters nationwide today, and it was recently revealed that Unfriended: Dark Web has been released with 2 distinct endings. We’ve received word from early screenings that these are no minor variations; rather, the differences make these 2 very different movies!
The first ending is the one people have seen at festivals including SXSW and Fantasia; it eschews the original’s supernatural troupes for a tale of desktop terror more grounded in urban legend and reality. The second ending recasts the film’s human villains as spectral entities. Whether this gimmick ends up putting more butts in seats for Blumhouse remains to be seen, but the potential for backlash also seems likely (especially with today’s cash-conscious horror fans).
While there is no way of knowing going into theaters which version of Unfriended: Dark Web the projectionist has reeled up for you, there might be clues throughout that hint at the final direction you’ll be taking. After finding a laptop, a young man goes online to play a game with five of his good friends. He shows them a mysterious folder that plays disturbing videos of people who appear to be in danger. They then receive an anonymous message that tells them they will all die if they disconnect or call the police. The planned night of fun quickly turns deadly as each user becomes the target of something sinister while the others watch helplessly in terror.
Unfriended: Dark Web is written and directed by Stephen Susco; the film stars Rebecca Rittenhouse, Betty Gabriel, and Chelsea Alden.
