If you haven’t seen Jigsaw, the 8th film in the long-running yet recently-dormant Saw franchise (which just hit theaters on Friday), you may want to consider yourself lucky. I’m a huge fan of Saw, but I had to conclude, objectively, that this latest chapter is the worst of the entire series. It doesn’t work as a prequel, sequel, reboot, or standalone; most unforgivable: It’s boring. You can read my spoiler-free review below.

If you saw the film, you may have been confused—or merely frustrated. While the Saw franchise thrives and misdirection and shocking twists, Jigsaw was a fucking mess; an unnecessary sequel that desperately seeks to justify its own existence—and fails.
