While uploading an image for a recent article on Jigsaw, the 8th installment in the enduring yet recently dormant Saw franchise, I inadvertently stumbled on what may be the film’s biggest reveal. It was the “Buckethead” picture of the newest batch of victims, and it came from Entertainment Weekly (who, in turn, got it from Lionsgate as an exclusive).

Embedded in the image was a description—one that seemed a bit too revealing for a film that depends on secrecy; I traced the picture back to its original posting on EW.com and confirmed that this was not the published caption; rather, it was likely an internal notation meant for communication within the site’s editorial department.
Warning: Below There Be Spoilers!
Check out the image below, along with the embedded notation; the mistakes in capitalization and the lack of punctuation in the “NOTE*” further indicates this was an inside message never intended for public consumption.
Saw: Legacy (2017)
From left to right: Mitch (Mandela van Peebles), Anna (Laura Vandervoort), Ryan (Paul Braunstein), Carly (Brittany Allen), and Buckethead
NOTE* the identity of the buckethead on the far right is a big reveal in the film, so they will not ID him
This means the identity of the character circled (below) is definitely someone we’ve seen before in the Saw franchise. Time to put on your thinking caps, Internet Detectives: What can we discern about this mystery “Buckethead?”
It’s a man;
He’s wearing a uniform; it could be scrubs, indicating he works in a hospital, or a jumpsuit indicating he’s been in jail or a mental asylum;
He’s wearing a wedding ring (or at the very least has a tan line where a ring would have been, perhaps indicating a recent divorce); and
While it’s difficult to magnify without losing quality, it looks like he has dark hair on his arms.
Now here’s where things get really interesting: In the most recent clip for the film, which we showed you yesterday, this unknown Buckethead is the only one of the “victims” who doesn’t regain consciousness when “the game” begins. Have a look below. Notice how, as everyone else panics, this guy just lies there.
It almost reminds me of how John Kramer (Tobin Bell) inserted himself directly into the action by playing a corpse in the first Saw. So, while it looks like the unknown Buckethead is dead to the world, I suspect he’s saving his energy—because he knows exactly what’s about to happen! It’s very important to note, that even before this character’s face is revealed, we can’t trust anything he says!
Whether Mr. Buckethead turns out to be the main villain or another Jigsaw protégé remains to be seen. We’ll know for sure when Jigsaw arrives in US Theaters on October 27th!
