David Cronenberg made huge waves for Canadian film with surreal, experimental film. Making various experimental films early in his career it was 1975’s Shivers which put him on the map. RABID followed in 1977 starring former porn star Marilyn Chambers in a mind blowing performance, it disturbed and thrilled horror fans across the world and began Cronenberg’s onslaught of utterly unique and horrifying films.
Well, two of the most prominent members of the current generation of Canadian horror filmmaking have been tasked with creating a remake. Jen and Sylvia Soska, who made people puke with Dead Hooker in a Trunk and brought the twisted world of American Mary to life will be taking it on. Say the Soskas, presumably at the same time like the twins from The Shining:
“The work of David Cronenberg is legendary, and Rabid is much more than just a horror movie. The real message of his film is powerful, and even more pivotal as we look at the world around us today. It’s an honor to be involved in this love letter to his original, which we handle with the same respect as Paul Schrader’s Cat People, Alexandre Aja’s The Hills Have Eyes and John Carpenter’s The Thing.”
Not sure about one of those three (can you guess miss which one?) but the Soskas appear to be taking on the project with a great deal of reverence to Cronenberg. This remake is apparently part of a plan that also involves a spinoff TV show, no word on whether Jen and Sylvia Soska will be involved with that too.
Personally, I think Shivers would have made for a more prescient remake right now but what say you dear readers? Do the Soskas have the goods to give us something as disturbing as the Cronenberg original?
