It’s been almost a year since we first heard murmurs of a potential Joker origin story; rumors described a gritty film set in the 1980s with Martin Scorsese producing and Leonardo DiCaprio as a frontrunner for the role of Batman’s greatest nemesis. Of course, all of this was somewhat confusing among additional rumors regarding a Joker feature film starring Jared Leto, who played the part to mixed reviews in Suicide Squad.

What a difference 11 months make! Leto’s future as the joker is now in serious doubt; Scorsese’s Joker origin story is moving forward in earnest, but not with DiCaprio. THR reported:
The Joker origin movie is officially a go at Warner Bros. Joaquin Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star as the arch-nemesis of Batman and shooting is set to begin in September in New York.
Todd Phillips is directing the film and co-wrote the script, which the studio describes as being an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.” Scott Silver co-wrote the script.
No word yet on who Phoenix’s co-stars will be, nor a target release date, but we’ll keep you posted as details emerge. Stay tuned!
