In case you’ve been living under a rock, you should realize that Freeform has a new series gearing up to launch tonight. Dead of Summer looks a little bit like a slasher, but the synopsis leads us to believe it could be something else entirely. Regardless of what the show is truly about, it’s hard to deny the fact that the early trailers for the series look rather enticing.
The show also has some good things going for it. It’s a throwback piece of sorts, the story taking place in the late 1980s, and there are a number of talented individuals behind the scenes, including veteran screenwriter, Adam Horowitz, and directors Mick Garris and Ron Underwood, who will each helm at least a single episode of the show.
Then there’s the blossoming talent in front of the cameras to consider. Zelda Williams is young but her potential is enormous. Elizabeth Mitchell is a refined veteran of the small and big screens alike. And Eli Goree is a young talent who’s already captured the critical eye. This one could conceivably be special, and it’s hard to pretend there’s not some excitement coursing through my body at the prospect of discovering another stellar genre television series.
Tonight we find out if Dead of Summer is the sleeper some of us are hoping for, or the dud that many have predicted.
In addition to Mitchell, Goree and Williams, Elizabeth Lail, Mark Indelicato, Alberto Frezza and Ronen Rubinstein star.
Check out a trailer and a few additional videos for the new show below, and tune into Freeform tonight at 9/8c to observe the premiere.
Synopsis: Set in the late 1980s, school is out for the summer, and a sun-drenched season of firsts beckons the counselors at Camp Stillwater, a seemingly idyllic Midwestern summer camp, including first loves, first kisses – and first kills. Stillwater’s dark, ancient mythology awakens, and what was supposed to be a summer of fun soon turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn.
