The Saw Franchise has been a Halloween staple for Lionsgate for much of the 2000’s. When word came down last week that production on Saw: Legacy was in the very early stages, we predicted the 8th Chapter would hit theaters in October of 2017. This morning we got confirmation that Legacy is slated for release on October 27, 2017.
Directors for Saw: Legacy have also been named: Identical twin brothers Peter and Michael Spierig have been attached. The duo first worked for Lionsgate on Undead in 2003, and have also helmed Daybreakers (2009) and Predestination (2014). It had recently been reported that the Spierig brothers we attached to direct Winchester Mystery House, but that will no doubt go on the back-burner as they tear into Legacy.
Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (the duo who penned Piranha 3D, Piranha 3DD, and Sorority Row) were previously reported as the film’s writers. Franchise co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell will act as executive producers.
The franchise revolves around the fictional character of John Kramer, also called the “Jigsaw Killer” or simply “Jigsaw”. He was introduced briefly in Saw and developed in more detail in Saw II. Rather than killing his victims outright, Jigsaw traps them in situations that he calls “tests” or “games” to test their will to live through physical or psychological torture. Despite the fact that John was murdered in Saw III, the films continue to focus on the posthumous influence of the Jigsaw Killer and his apprentices by exploring his character via flashbacks.
