It is with heavy hearts that we’re getting news of the passing of Hugh M. Hefner, the innovating founder of Playboy magazine, has passed away at the age of 91. Though often a controversial figure, he promotive unity and nonviolence along with sex-positive imagery and a swinging lifestyle. He also vehemently opposed artistic censorship, something all horror fans can appreciate.
Hefner became a cultural icon of mammoth proportions, appearing in dozens of films and TV shows as himself; he also played the President of the United States in Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (although he’s uncredited). While surely not his finest hour, you can catch a glimpse of him in the trailer below—he’s the one wearing a dolphin mask!
In all seriousness, Hefner’s influence on popular culture has been tremendous. We only get so many Hefners in a lifetime, so losing him is a great loss. Our hearts go out to Hefner’s many fans, friends, and family. He was one in a billion and will truly be missed.
