As I was out of town covering Sinister Creature Con in Stockton, CA, this weekend, I wasn’t able to give Adam West the immediate memorial he deserved when his passing was announced Saturday morning. It was shocking news; and, even though Sinister Creature Con is a horror-centric event, West passing cast a cloud over the entire arena. Many attendees chose vintage Batman Shirts over the bloody cosplay usually found at horror events.
Adam West was more than just an actor who played Batman in the 1960s: Adam West made Batman the iconic hero he is today. Some may argue that actors like Michael Keaton and Christian Bale made their turns as the caped crusader completely unique, but West set the original bar. Later Batmen had more strength, shocking inner turmoil, and much better toys, but no Batman was as classy, cunning, and hilarious. Even if future actors weren’t attempting to duplicate aspects of 1960s Batman, at the very least they were dogged by the specter of West supreme popularity.
He may have never escaped the role that made him iconic, though he eventually manifested as a unique character incarnate. He basically played himself as Mayor West on Family Guy.
West died at the age of 88 after a short battle with Leukemia. Everyone here at Horror Freak News would like to send our sincerest condolences to West’s family, friends, and fans. He was one in a billion and he will truly be missed.
