Back on January 6th, a trailer was released for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands; it was called “The Red Dot” commercial, and it thrilled gaming fans for its clever hook and gory climax. If you found the advert practically cinematic, it’s because its director is no stranger to high caliber, hot-led, skull-popping combat action: None other than original Predator helmer John McTiernan, also famed for driving Die Hard and The Hunt for Red October.
If you’re wondering why we didn’t bring you this juicy item sooner, it’s because we didn’t know—no one did really. That’s why we’re thankful for the folks at Vulture.com who made the connection:
McTiernan’s involvement in “The Red Dot” hasn’t been widely publicized (or even particularly acknowledged), which is a shame, especially considering it’s his first filmed project in a whopping 14 years. (His last movie was the rainy Rashomon-on-a-military base thriller Basic.) McTiernan’s inauspicious reemergence leads to a couple of bigger questions: Where, exactly, has he been? And what makes this ad so special?
