There are few instances of succeeding on a major scale with a minor budget but back in 2013, the indie film about two former baseball players that are forced together by a zombie apocalypse, struggling to survive each day. That film was The Battery. A film that was written and directed by Jeremy Gardner. The film went on to achieve a ton of critical acclaim and made people wonder what was next from Gardner.
Next was Tex Montana Will Survive. A faux-documentary about Tex Montana, a survivalist who has to prove that he can survive after he is discovered as a fraud, despite his own ineptitude.
And now coming on February 14, 2020, is a new creature feature entitled After Midnight. Here is the synopsis:
“Dealing with a girlfriend suddenly leaving is tough enough. But for Hank, heartbreak couldn’t have come at a worse time. There’s also a monster trying to break through his front door every night.”
When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gardner had this to say about the film:
“Hank is this small-town, good-old-boy hunter, about 10 years into a long-term relationship. He wakes up one morning and his partner, Abby, has just gone, [leaving] just a very cryptic note. Around the same time she leaves, something starts coming out of the swamp at night and scratching at the door and trying to get in. You don’t know if he’s losing his mind, because he doesn’t know where she is, he doesn’t know what this thing is, people don’t believe him. So it’s kind of a creature-feature romance.”
