One of the most highly praised films from the mainstream film festival circuit last year, The Witch from writer/director Robert Eggers blew audiences away around the world. Picked up by burgeoning film distributor A24 who have struck gold with films like Ex-Machina, Room and Under the Skin, they are releasing The WItch on February 19th. Not since The Babadook in 2013 has there been such a stir caused by a horror film and just seeing the trailer it is clear what the fuss is all about.
The trailers for The Witch have been fantastic, not giving away too much of the story but certainly communicating how incredibly damn creepy it is going to be! Kudos to A24 for not giving away the whole thing like so many horror trailers do these days. From the official website tells us this:
“In this exquisitely made and terrifying new horror film, the age-old concepts of witchcraft, black magic and possession are innovatively brought together to tell the intimate and riveting story of one family’s frightful unraveling in the New England wilderness circa 1630.”
The Witch is a taut thriller about an isolated family living on the edge of an ominous forest where religious fervor get’s the better of the family’s patriarch William. Played by the superbly creepy Ralph Ineson (Dagmer Cleftjaw from Game of Thrones) with his wife played by Kate Dickie (Lysa Arryn from Game of Thrones) and a young cast left at their mercy, this is some really scary-looking stuff.
Below you will find the final poster (courtesy of Entertainment Weekly) and then the an earlier poster which is even creepier. Are you looking forward to this stark, deeply disturbing-looking piece of film?
