After an on-and-off relationship that lasted over a decade and a half, I finally quit smoking on August 8th, 2017 (smoking cigarettes, that is!). Americans are getting more health conscious, and with alternatives like vaping, it was a tough decision I was happy to have made!
My choice had nothing to do with those horrible “Truth” commercials that claim cigarette companies exploit poor people & veterans; the same campaign that held “die-ins” and used urine and dog poop to drive their points home. It’s not that I disagreed with the spirit of the PSA’s (that smoking’s bad, m’kay), they just felt like over-reactionary propaganda.

Even with the best intentions, PSAs run the risk of being preachy and frankly, laughable; we all remember “This is your brain on drugs. Any Questions?” That’s why important messages are often adorned in eye-catching packages, tricking folks into accepting a beneficial tip by entertaining them first and foremost.
I’ve been loving the Little Lungs in a Great Big World campaign from the organization The Real Cost, not because I find them especially effective, but because they’re bizarre, hysterical, and more than just a bit creepy! Of course, regular readers of Horror Freak News know I find anything made using stop-motion animation completely unnerving, but also impossible to look away from.
The adverts feature “Little Lungs”, a disembodied set of organs who smoked as a teen. He’s grown-up now, living in a world of other disembodied lungs, but his history with cigarettes has permanently stunted his growth, leaving him sickly and prone to disaster. It’s like, Mr. Bill on acid.
Follow the adventures of Little Lungs in the videos below. And remember kids: Thrown down those cigarettes (and pick up a bong!).
