Happy Death Day was a surprise genre hit of 2017, proving that a PG-13 Rated horror movie can provide top-notch entertainment—even if it’s an unabashed retooling of Groundhog’s Day. Fans got excited last March when we reported murmurs suggesting a sequel was in the works with a potential start-of-production date set for this month.
While many rumors cause ripples without ever leading to anything concrete, that’s not the case this time! We’ve got more than just conjecture; we’ve got casting news!
Per We Got This Covered:
As expected, Jessica Rothe will be back as Tree, and joining her are Life of Pi actor Suraj Sharma in the role of Samar Ghosh, “a science enthusiast and geek who enjoys coding in his spare time,” and The Middle‘s Sarah Yarkin, who’s set to play Dre Morgan, “a science geek and tom-boy with a sleepy feline gaze who is Samar’s partner-in-crime.”
We don’t have a release date or even an official synopsis, but Rothe previously told Collider:
“[Director Chris Landon] has done this incredible thing where the sequel, the way he described it to me, elevates the movie from being a horror movie – and I wouldn’t even say it’s just a horror movie because it’s a horror, comedy, rom-com drama – into a Back to the Future type of genre film where the sequel joins us right from where we left off,” Rothe says. “It explains a lot of things in the first one that didn’t get explained, and it elevates everything. I was really pleased to know that we weren’t just gonna be pushing all the buttons that people loved the first time, over and over again, ‘cause I think that gets old. I’m really excited to see if it comes to fruition and, if it does, what the final product looks like. I hope we get to do it! I had a ball!”
We’ll keep you posted as details emerge. In the meantime, check out the trailer and synopsis for last year’s Happy Death Day below.
Official Synopsis: Tree Gelbman is a blissfully self-centered collegian who wakes up on her birthday in the bed of a student named Carter. As the morning goes on, Tree gets the eerie feeling that she’s experienced the events of this day before. When a masked killer suddenly takes her life in a brutal attack, she once again magically wakes up in Carter’s dorm room unharmed. Now, the frightened young woman must relive the same day over and over until she figures out who murdered her.
In addition to Rothe, Happy Death Day stars Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, and Charles Aitken.
