Fear the Walking Dead has finally begun to heat up, and we’re wondering where things are headed for our small group of survivors. Opening up we see Alicia on a different vessel – Connor’s vessel. She’s being afforded some hospitality but there’s certainly something wrong with this situation, beyond the fact that Alicia shouldn’t be there. Oh, the other thing that’s off? The boat isn’t moving. It’s sitting on solid ground.
Connor’s little band of clowns feel pretty damn useless. They’re just taking up space, and if this is what passes for villain material, well, we’re off to a rocky start. These guys are about as intimidating as Mickey Mouse.
Back with our protagonists we see Reed being toyed with by Daniel, who’s taking his time cleaning the wounded scumbag. Reed is doing all he can to bully his way through the situation, but it isn’t doing much of anything. He also indicated that he may be Connor’s brother, for what that’s worth. Chris is left behind when Daniel leaves, and he’s given strict orders to stay out of the room and avoid engaging with Reed.
Carlos is concerned that the group will not be able to gain access into Mexico, given the number of them present. Alicia is back on Connor’s boat working her manipulative ways. For the record, we still haven’t seen Travis on the boat.
Speaking of the devil… we know where Travis is, he’s being held in somewhat cramped confines on Conner’s boat, isolated from everyone else. He’s looking to put his resourcefulness to good use by escaping, but so far, no luck. And then he gets a visitor in the form of a young woman who opens her encounter with Travis by relaying horrifying stories. Turns out, it’s the woman who was left in the raft. We learn that she is indeed the one responsible for finding Travis and their boat. Looks like Strand shouldn’t have cut that rope after all – came back to bite him in the ass.
We continue bouncing back and forth between boats. Alicia is losing her patience with her little boy toy Jack, who is quite obviously hiding some things. He also lacks a backbone which isn’t doing him any favors. However, he’s spilling all sorts of secrets to Alicia. He’s also contemplating assisting Alicia in escaping. We’ll see how serious he is about this.
While Travis and this other broad have a conversation, our annoyance radar is going off like crazy. She’s got a personal vendetta against Travis, the main one responsible for even attempting to help her while she was on the raft. She’s treating him as though he cut the rope, which feels absolutely ludicrous. Weird, confused broad right here. Some heart to heart looks to be lightening the tension between the two, but she’s still got the look of a vindictive cat with some serious tricks up her sleeve.
Chris is having his buttons pushed by Reed. This guy is just dreadful to listen to, and his nonsense is grating. Just as it looks like Chris is going to be pushed over the edge, Nick enters the corridor and gives Chris some good, mature advice in a very Darylesque moment. How much will stick? Who knows, but it’s a great moment for both Nick and Chris.
Alicia and Jack are working on a full-fledged escape plan, or so we think. Can they get off the boat without drawing Connor’s attention? Can Alicia get Travis out as well? Does Jack have something else on his mind? We’ll likely find out the truth in the fading moments of the episode, which are edging closer quickly.
Madison and the others are on the hunt for Connor. Finally there’s some radio interaction and Madison and Connor agree to swap Reed for Alicia and Travis. This can’t end well, as we know that Reed’s in bad shape, despite what Madison says. In moments none of that matters as we see that Chris has executed Reed. According to the youngster he was already dead and on his way to becoming a zombie. What price will the group now pay?
Chris is continuing to harden up, and it’s nice to see. He’s taking on a willingness to do things that others do not want to. He’s also one of the first to grasp the fact that once you die, you’re coming back a zombie, no two ways about it. This kid has gone from ultra-annoying to wicked compelling.
Suddenly Reed changes, transforming into a zombie. He tries to attack, but that’s easily thwarted by Nick and Daniel. Daniel pins him to a will with the same sharp object he’d already been impaled by. Perhaps Daniel wants to study this ghoul.
As things come to an end Madison takes off to meet with Connor, a hooded and zombiefied Reed in the raft with her. How she plans on exchanging this monster for Alicia and Travis is beyond me, but we’re moments away from seeing her own plan in action. Meanwhile Alicia gets the ball moving early. The moment is upon us and the trade is made. Travis is set free, but Connor and a few of his men are bitten by Reed. It sure as hell isn’t a clean handoff, but it somehow works out.
Alicia and Travis are free and headed back for their boat. Fear the Walking Dead is beginning to generate some compelling questions. Answers will no doubt come our way, but we’ve got a handful of episodes before we’ll see where this arc takes us.
