The latest trailer for Nikolaj Arcel’s The Dark Tower, “The Legacy of the Gunslinger” featuring Idris Elba, aired during last night’s BET Awards, where the actor was a presenter and honoree. It includes some of the best action sequences yet while adding insight into Elba’s character. It’s especially illuminating considering Arcel’s recent reveal that The Dark Tower is actually a continuation/sequel to Stephen King’s bestselling series.
“It is, in fact, a continuation,” director Nik Arcel told IGN. “It is a canon continuation. That’s exactly what we intended and what Stephen King has signed off on.”

Official Synopsis: The Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, roams an Old West-like landscape where “the world has moved on” in pursuit of the man in black. Also searching for the fabled Dark Tower, in the hopes that reaching it will preserve his dying world. The Dark Tower stars Katheryn Winnick, Matthew McConaughey, and Idris Elba and is slated for US Theatrical release on August 4th.
There are other worlds than these. Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, the ambitious and expansive story from one of the world’s most celebrated authors, makes its launch to the big screen. The last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim, also known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.
Stephen King published the first Dark Tower novel back in 1982; it’s unique in the bestselling author’s pantheon for its inclusion of western elements, along with horror and sci-fi. The Dark Tower series includes 8 books total, meaning this summer’s film could be the beginning of an enduring and profitable franchise.
