Erykah Badu is known for her cerebral soul music, not for her macabre sensibilities, but in a recent interview with EW, the Grammy winner discussed some truly bizarre funeral plans she’s got—for herself! The topic came up during her time on Entertainment Weekly: The Show, where she was joined by senior editor Kevin O’Donnell; Badu was asked about the music she’d like played at her funeral.
The singer-songwriter thinks for a moment, but says she has to describe the funeral itself before the song choice would make sense. “I want to be butt naked. I want my arms to be glued to my chest like this,” explains Badu, motioning with her arms crossed across her chest. Badu clarifies the body wouldn’t actually be there, just a wax figure that would represent her.
“I’ll have on a helmet, and I want to be put in a cannon,” she continues. “I want it to be lit and shot out of the cannon, and when it gets the highest point, I want dynamite wrapped around my body. They’re gonna blow it up and parts just fly and fall everywhere on people, and I want them to be playing ‘When the Saints [Go] Marching In.’”
While absolutely outlandish, her plans are similar to Hunter S. Thompson’s last hurrah; the infamous gonzo journalist’s remains were cremated and shot out of a cannon following his death in 2005.
