Death House finished filming April 18, in spite of being set back a bit by the unexpected passing of writer/producer/actor for the film, and horror icon Gunnar Hansen of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame. It is pretty clear that this film was written for horror fans, and casts old-school favorites like Dee Wallace, Adrienne Barbeau, Kane Hodder, Sid Haig, Bill Mosley, Barbara Crampton, Debbie Rochon and Tom Savini… not to mention Hansen himself. For the fan of horror classics from the 80s and beyond this one is going to be the treat to beat all treats, with the legendary performers from Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw, The Howling, The Fog, House of 1000 Corpses, Tromeo and Juliet and countless others represented. Death House is in effect the “Open House” of horror movies.
The story involves two federal agents who fight their way through nine levels of Hell inside a prison known as the Death House. A mass-scale prison break turns the quest into a horror ride indeed. Filmmakers dub this film the “Horror Movie genre version of ‘The Expendables'”.
The script was originally written by Hansen in 2009, and was re-written in 2013. It has been reported that the story was completely changed in the newer version, though Hansen remained directly involved until his passing last year.
The images released are interesting to say the least, particularly the implication of Virtual Reality contraptions. Is the prison and the subsequent nine levels of Hell all from the prisoner’s own mind? We will see that for sure soon, as the film is slated for release in October 2016.
