In American, just about anyone can get their hands on a shotgun, but European chocolate eggs are illegal; specifically, the Italian/German confection Kinder Surprise aka Kinder Eggs. It’s not the chocolate that’s the problem, it’s the toy “surprise” hiding inside. US laws prohibit the sale of candies with toys or trinkets inside, and the plastic toys in a Kinder Egg are considered potential choking hazards for children under 3.
Not only are Kinder Surprise illegal to import, trying to smuggle them in from Canada or Mexico can get you in some serious trouble. In June 2012, US Customs and Border Protection in Seattle detained a couple men returning from Vancouver when they found 6 Kinder Eggs hidden under a seat; they were threatened with a fine of up to $2,500 per egg!
All of this is ridiculous, yes, but what makes Kinder Surprise something of a macabre oddity is a bizarre commercial for the candies that aired in the 1980s (except in the US, of course). It featured a Humpty Dumpty character, a puppet, which actually seems and appropriate spokesperson for chocolate eggs—on paper. This particular Dumpty, however, is so strange it’s unnerving.
Instead of an eggshell, this character is skin-colored and has ears. More disturbing are his beady black eyes which look truly demonic. As if this abomination couldn’t get any worse, he speaks in a peculiar gibberish that’s extremely creepy. The commercial culminates with Mr. Dumpty taking a suicidal plunge off the wall, laughing manically as he falls to his death.
Have a look, but don’t blame us if this freaky thing haunts your nightmare for the next few decades!
