We’ve been following news regarding the TV reboot of Heathers, not because the original film (released in 1988) is a horror movie, but because it was essential viewing for just about anyone who came of age in that era. Besides, it’s got a body count that rivals most teen-centric slashers! A series is in the works at TV Land and sources have reported that Shannen Doherty is playing an integral role. A photo the actress posted on Instagram (below) shows her wearing the Red-Scrunchy of Power!
Though information about Doherty’s new character is currently under wraps (TV Land confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that she will play a “pivotal, unnamed character”), the role is a big step back into the spotlight for the former Beverly Hills, 90210 star, who has been battling breast cancer since 2015.
Doherty had a penchant for playing bitchy characters throughout her career, but Heather Duke may be the most loathsome of all! We’re definitely excited to see if Doherty is reprising this specific role, or if she’s playing a brand new bitchy Heather. Either way, we’ll be watching!
In the original Heathers (Official Synopsis): Veronica (Winona Ryder) is part of the most popular clique at her high school, but she disapproves of the other girls’ cruel behavior. When Veronica and her new boyfriend, J.D. (Christian Slater), confront clique leader Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) and accidentally poison her, they make it appear a suicide. Soon Veronica realizes that J.D. is intentionally killing students he does not like. She races to stop J.D. while also clashing with the clique’s new leader, Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty).
