Apple removed its No. 1 free app on its App Store. The Countdown app had beat TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram to become Apple’s No. 1 free app. The app is based on the upcoming horror film Countdown.
What was so disturbing about the app is that it simulated that it could predict the exact date and time of the user’s death. The app could control certain functions of the phone, including flashlight, music player, and vibrate function. The app came with a clear warning: “This app is for entertainment purposes. Results should not be taken seriously.”
According to Variety, the app had not only been the No. 1 free app in the U.S. It was also the No. 1 free app in Australia, Canada, Finland, Ireland, and Norway.
The app was created by Ryan Boyling, who saw the film trailer and decided to turn the movie’s premise into a real app. The filmmakers, STX Films, recently acquired the app from Boyling.
STX is set to release an Android version of the app over the weekend.
The film Countdown hits theaters on October 25, 2019. The movie is written and directed by Justin Dec. Countdown stars Anne Winters, Elizabeth Lail, and Charlie McDermott.
Synopsis: When a nurse downloads an app that claims to predict the moment a person will die, it tells her she only has three days to live. With the clock ticking and a figure haunting her, she must find a way to save her life before time runs out.
