When Warner Bros announced on April 23rd that the next film in The Conjuring franchise was slated for a July 2019 release, it wasn’t clear what, exactly, would be manifesting. Would it be another creeper pulled from the case files of Ed and Loraine Warren, or would we see “The Crooked Man” getting his own spinoff like The Nun? I was personally rooting for The Crooked Man.

It turns out, the answer is “None of the Above”, as THR has revealed the next Conjuring movie will be another Annabelle spinoff. This makes the smiling vessel of evil the true star of the franchise. Introduced in the first Conjuring movie, the diminutive devil doll has already enjoyed 2 feature film spinoffs. When she gets a 3rd, she’ll have officially logged more screen time than The Warrens!
Gary Dauberman, the writer behind the Annabelle movies, will make his directorial debut with an untitled Annabelle project, the newest installment of New Line’s horror franchise based on a devil doll from The Conjuring cinematic universe.
The project, which Dauberman is also writing, will once again be produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster and the Peter Safran Co., the banners that produce what has become a billion-dollar franchise and among the most profitable movies ever made.
Details are being kept secret but the story will once again focus on the porcelain doll that is possessed by a demonic force.
The new Annabelle installment is on the fast track for New Line, which has set the film’s release for July 3, 2019.
In addition to the 2 Conjuring films and the 2 Annabelle films already released, a 5th film in the universe, The Nun, is currently in post-production. That film, a spinoff of The Conjuring 2, features the demon Valak and takes place in a European convent.
For kicks, check out the trailers and synopses for the first 2 Annabelle films below.
Official Synopsis: John Form (Ward Horton) thinks he’s found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia (Annabelle Wallis) : a vintage doll in a beautiful white dress. However, the couple’s delight doesn’t last long: One terrible night, devil worshippers invade their home and launch a violent attack against the couple. When the cultists try to summon a demon, they smear a bloody rune on the nursery wall and drip blood on Mia’s doll, thereby turning the former object of beauty into a conduit for ultimate evil.
Official Synopsis: Former toy maker Sam Mullins and his wife, Esther, are happy to welcome a nun and six orphaned girls into their California farmhouse. Years earlier, the couple’s 7-year-old daughter Annabelle died in a tragic car accident. Terror soon strikes when one child sneaks into a forbidden room and finds a seemingly innocent doll that appears to have a life of its own.
