Annabelle 2 director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) took to Twitter to reveal the new title of the second film featuring the diminutive devil doll first introduced in The Conjuring: Annabelle: Creation! The title seems to suggest an origin story—except for the fact that the first Annabelle film, released in 2014, seemed to fill us in on how scary little Miss came to life. Annabelle took place in the 1960s, so it’s difficult to tell (especially without a trailer) whether Creation takes place before or after that installment.
The synopsis, though, may be even more revealing:
Official Synopsis: Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.
Annabelle: Creation stars Stephanie Sigman (SPECTRE), Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave), Lulu Wilson (Ouija: Origin of Evil, Deliver Us from Evil), Philippa Coulthard (After the Dark), Grace Fulton (Badland), Lou Lou Safran (The Choice), Samara Lee (Foxcatcher, The Last Witch Hunter), Tayler Buck in her feature film debut, with Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) and Miranda Otto (Homeland, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy).
The mention of a nun makes me wonder if Annabelle: Creation will include a tie-in to the next Conjuring spinoff, The Nun. Currently in production at New Line under the direction of Corin Hardy, the plot for The Nun is being kept closely under wraps. Perhaps this is intentional, with plans to reveal the connection between the characters when Annabelle: Creation hits US Theaters on August 11th.

Check out the trailer and synopsis for the first Annabelle film below.
Official Synopsis: John Form (Ward Horton) thinks he’s found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia (Annabelle Wallis): a vintage doll in a beautiful white dress. However, the couple’s delight doesn’t last long: One terrible night, devil worshippers invade their home and launch a violent attack against the couple. When the cultists try to summon a demon, they smear a bloody rune on the nursery wall and drip blood on Mia’s doll, thereby turning the former object of beauty into a conduit for ultimate evil.
