Months or conjecture can finally be put to rest, as the theme of the most enigmatic season of American Horror Story has finally been revealed; Season 6 will go back in time to explore the infamous “Lost Colony” of Roanoke Island. Set photos released by TMZ put the mystery to rest by featuring a tree with the word “Croatoan” carved into it.
The Roanoke Colony, also known as the Lost Colony, was established on Roanoke Island in what is today’s Dare County, North Carolina, United States. It was a late 16th-century attempt by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a permanent English settlement. The colony was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. The colonists (118 total) disappeared during the Anglo-Spanish War, three years after the last shipment of supplies from England. Their disappearance gave rise to the nickname “The Lost Colony.” There has been no conclusive evidence as to what happened to the colonists.
The only clue was as cryptic as the disappearance itself: The word “Croatoan” carved on a tree.
American Horror Story returns to FX on Wednesday, September 14th.
