We got a chance to talk to Devin Sidell, part of the cast of Rob Zombie’s newest film 31 a few hours before it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Unfortunately Devin was limited on what she could say about the actual content of the film due to an NDA but we got some interesting insight into a horror newbie getting thrown into the deep end on a Rob Zombie set of all places.
Devin is both a screen and stage actress who happened to grow up with a fear of clowns and a very low tolerance for the scares and thrills of horror movies. Devin even confesses she was not even able to watch any of Zombie’s prior work because she’s a “‘fraidy cat”. Of course then she found herself on the set of 31, a Rob Zombie horror film where the protagonists are chased by, what else, psychotic clowns!
Devin Sidell spoke positively of the experience however, telling us that she had a ton of fun on set. Working with some actors that Zombie had worked with previously there was a lot of trust between director and cast. Asked if there were any particularly notable or challenging scenes Devin (while trying not to give anything away due to the NDA, she said it will be more fun to see it for ourselves anyway) said that her part in 31 certainly made things interesting. Her costuming and make-up meant that it was too cost-prohibitive to let her in and out of it during the shoot so some days she was stuck on set the whole day. As the crew would work around her there was someone whose entire job was to hold a towel in front of her face to make sure she didn’t get splashed with mud. This was a big concern considering how grimy, bloody and gory Rob Zombie projects tend to be!
Despite these conditions, Devin had a great time with the experienced cast and enthusiastic crew and has definitely turned a corner on how she felt about horror movies. Devin was very excited at the prospect of doing more horror, loving that her performance was more important than having to look perfectly pristine and pretty all of the time. As she was going to see 31 for the first time with cast and crew that night at Sundance she assured us that she would be watching between fingers covering her face. Also that whoever was sitting next to her was going to get a lot of fingernails stuck in their leg! Here’s to hoping to we see her in many more horror movies to come as she was an utter delight to talk to and obviously took the role and the film very seriously.
