UPDATE: Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell is set to play in theaters one last night. Zombie marketed the movie as Sid Haig’s last film. But HFN has confirmed that it is not Sid’s last movie.
For the past several weeks, if not months, Rob Zombie has been courting the press to get exposure for his new movie 3 From Hell. After less than stellar reviews by numerous news outlets, Rob Zombie starting pushing a narrative in the press that 3 From Hell is Sid’s last movie and that because of Sid’s health, Rob had to sneak him on set.
When Horror Freak News first ran this article, some readers believed that this was an opinion piece. It was not an opinion piece. We have confirmed that 3 From Hell is NOT Sid’s last movie. And we have confirmed that some of Rob Zombie’s statements regarding 3 From Hell and Sid Haig is not true.
Let’s clear the air.
Is 3 From Hell Sid Haig’s last film?
No, it is not. There are two more films that Sid Haig had finished filming. The two films are Hanukkah and Abruptio. Even though Abruptio marked as filming in IMDB, Sid had completed filming. This information was confirmed through comments made by Sid Haig’s official Instagram page.
So why the controversy?
Rob Zombie has tried to turn 3 From Hell from a flop to a cash grab by marketing the movie as Sid Haig’s last movie. He also goes as far as to blame Sid’s health as the reason for his limited role in the film.
Rob Zombie told Kerrang, “Sid knew that was going to be his last thing. I mean, we talked about it how ill he was. He put on a brave face, but he knew that was probably…you never know for sure, but he was pretty sure that would be his last appearance in a movie. So we had to make it happen. And it got dicey for a minute that it wasn’t gonna happen at all, so it’s good that we got that. The scene, although fairly brief, is pretty good.”
Rob’s message is pretty clear in that interview where he stands. Rob Zombie is either outright lying or intentionally misleading the fans.
Sid Haig’s officially Instagram, which is run by his wife Suzie, stated that Rob’s information in the Kerrang interview as “bullshit.”
But Rob Zombie’s bullshit doesn’t stop there. He told Blabbermouth.net this long story about Sid’s health. Rob Zombie says Sid was hiding his health from Rob by canceling wardrobe fitting and stating that Sid’s appearance has drastically changed.
Rob Zombie explains that he visited Sid in the hospital once he saw Sid that he had to go back and rewrite the script. He didn’t believe that Sid could pass Lionsgate production insurance physical. He states that “For a brief time, he was denied even being in the movie at all, at which point, we’re like I don’t know what I’m doing. Overnight, I basically rewrite the script and create a new character of Foxy.”
Rob continues to tell various press sites that he had to sneak Sid Haig onto set to film the few minutes that Sid is in 3 From Hell. Rob makes it sound like he broke Sid out of the hospital to shoot 3 From Hell. Or that Sid was on some medical pass to shoot.
Sid Haig’s Instagram sets the record straight by confirming that “He was well out of any medical facility when he shot his scene in 3 From Hell, and this (Hanukkah) was shot months after.”
But Rob didn’t have to sneak Sid Haig onto set. He had Lionsgate’s permission to bring Sid on set to film. He even admits that in the same interviews that he tells the “sneak” lie, but he is unchallenged by the press.
Rob says, “Lionsgate was nice enough to let me sneak Sid on the set, and we shot with him one more- that one scene we got. That was basically him in a chair talking, and that was really difficult just to get that one scene.”
Rob also tells numerous media outlets that Sid looked like a “skeleton.”
It seems like Rob was on a press campaign to say that Sid was too frail to shoot enough content to be in more scenes of 3 From Hell.
Sid Haig shot his scene from 3 From Hell in March 2018, but then in October 2018, he shot his scenes from Hanukkah.
Hanukkah director and writer, Eben McGarr, explains his experience shooting with Sid. “ Eben explains, “Anyone who thinks he (Sid Haig) was EVER ‘frail’ never knew Sid. On set that day, we had a stunt double and stand-in read to go, and Sid wouldn’t let them do anything. They sat around all day because Sid was pure passion and worked harder than crew less than half his age. He wasn’t just a producer of the film in name only, he collaborated on creative choices and led by example. He is the definition of old school Hollywood and work ethic, and everyone should take a page from his book.”
Why all this?
Sid Haig spent a lot of time with his fans through the years. He was more than a horror icon. He was a friend to all of us who have had the pleasure of meeting him at the numerous horror conventions. And his friends aren’t going to let Rob Zombie’s BS go unchecked.
Rob Zombie; it is completely dishonest and unethical to use Sid’s health as a marketing tool to try and get his fans out to the theaters to watch the film. And when Sid’s fans have called you out on social media, whoever is running your IG has been deleting the comments from fans.
While no other horror website has reported these comments from Sid’s IG account, I feel that Horror Freak News should if it was important enough for his family to try and set the record straight on IG than it is important enough for us to cover it so that more of Sid’s fan can be informed.
Original article published on 10/06/2019:
The horror community was devasted last month when we lost Sid Haig, an amazing horror icon. Many horror fans believed that Sid’s brief appearance in Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell was his last appearance on film, but that is not true.
Sid Haig’s official Instagram, which is run by his wife Suzie Haig, released a picture of Sid on set with the following description “Sid in wardrobe, makeup, and character as Judah Lazarus on the set of his last film, Eben McGarr’s ‘Hannukah.’ He was really excited for this film, which he had a good time doing and also stars our good friends, Caroline Williams and Joe Knetter. It’s also the last film of the great Dick Miller. Due out next year.”
So why does everyone think that Sid Haig’s last film is 3 From Hell? Well, let’s be honest and call it like it is. Rob Zombie is in full sales mode for his latest film 3 From Hell.
Rob recently gave a quote to Kerrang that said: “Sid Haig knew 3 From Hell would be his last appearance in a movie.” And for the large part, the press has been feeding into Zombie’s sales pitch. But not Horror Freak News; I am going to call it like it is, which is what I believe Sid would want.
The movie has been losing money despite what corporate-owned industry website has been saying. So they are releasing 3 From Hell for an additional night, and Rob Zombie is out there trying to get press.
When 3 From Hell premiered during Fathom Events; the film received numerous negative reviews, and fans were upset that Sid Haig’s appearance was so brief. Instead of taking responsibility for a poorly written script, Rob Zombie has been shifting the blame to Sid Haig’s health, which I think is BS.
Zombie also told Kerrang, “It was kind of a drag, because I knew people would wonder about that and especially, you know how fans are — ‘Fuck you, man, you shoulda’ done it like this!’ But I wasn’t in a position where I could tell what was happening, because it’s not my life, it’s someone else’s private business, their health. So I was slowly letting on what was happening, because it became more public — that he was in the hospital, what was going on.”
I understand an actor’s health could play a part in creating a challenge in production. But let’s be honest, Sid has been out there working, interacting with fans at horror conventions, and filming other projects. Rob had many years to make this movie, so don’t blame Sid’s health for problems with 3 From Hell. Horror fans aren’t going to take that Rob. I am going to call you out on that, Rob.
In my opinion, if Rob Zombie wanted to honor Sid Haig’s last performance, then Rob should reach out to the filmmakers from Hanukkah and see if he can help them get Sid’s last performance on the big screen.
Check out these stills of the legendary Sid Haig in Hanukkah:
Obediah Lazarus is the son of Judah Lazarus, the original Hanukiller. In 1983, Judah terrorized NY for seven nights and was preparing to sacrifice his eight-year-old son, Obediah, on the eighth night. Judah was convinced it was God’s will, like Abraham and Isaac, to sacrifice his only son to God. Luckily for Obediah, police tracked Judah down and stopped the sacrifice, but Judah was gunned down in the process. Warped by hatred with no guidance, Obediah Lazarus becomes a religious extremist, intolerant of non-Jews, “bad Jews,” and those he perceives to be enemies of the Jewish faith. He is about to unleash eight nights of horror. A group of Jewish teens are getting ready to party for the holidays, but are in for a Festival of Frights. With the help of a wise Rabbi, they deduce that the murder victims have violated Judaic law and that their only chance at survival is to embrace their faith.
