It’s been a turbulent season for The Walking Dead, the 7th in AMC’s flagship zombie drama. Between the devastating opening episode that saw Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan) assassinate both Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and Glenn (Steven Yeun), to the depressing fragmentation of both key characters and a central story arch that saw fans jumping ship, a phenomenon dubbed “The Walking Dexit”.
Fans have been through a lot, but it looks like the payoff is about to arrive—assuming, that is, you consider an epic bloody clash of clans payoff (like I most certainly do!). Producer Scott Gimple took to the internet in an effort to get fans revved up for the beginning of all-out war, which will see the opening shots fired on Sunday.
“We step on the gas and we do not let our foot off the gas until the end of episode 16,” he says. “Although because I’m working on season 8 now, the foot is on the gas again! I mean, the next three episodes we’re going to shoot you through a lot of big events and things become quantum intense.”
For a show like The Walking Dead, the concept of “quantum intense” is almost impossible to fathom. We’re talking about a show that routinely kills off major characters, while subjecting those who live the everlasting physical and psychological wounds. Inevitably, characters we have come to love will be making their final bow. More than that, the entire landscape of the saga is about to shift, literally and thematically.
