It was worth the wait! Horror Freaks like me were glued to the boob-tube, tuned in to AMC for the midseason return of The Walking Dead last night, absolutely rabid with excitement. While the first half of Season 7 irked some long-time watchers by focusing on a depressing and defeated story arch, it seems we’re well on the way to new levels of terror, excitement, and devastation. Get ready to rise up because all-out war is on the horizon!
Our last look at Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the crew was a rare moment of happiness. After a sustained period of separation, the band was back together! If the scene of Rick and Daryl (Norman Reedus) hugging didn’t bring a tear to your eye, you must be a zombie. But good times can’t last in the world of The Walking Dead, and there was plenty of darkness in Episode 9 last night.
For example: Any hope that King Ezekiel (Khary Payton) would happily team-up with gung-ho Alexandria and the grudging Hilltop were dashed when the tiger handler refused to risk the tenuous peace his Kingdom maintains with The Saviors by forging a new alliance. This means that any future battle with Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan) will be hard fought (to say the least). Without the Kingdom, our heroes just don’t have the numbers for a fair fight.
When the Saviors arrive at Alexandria looking for fugitive Daryl, they gleefully tear the town to shred, promising instant death if he’s found. In order to maintain an illusion of compliance, Rick cowers in a manner we find quite distasteful.
And what’s up with Gabriel, packing up all of Alexandria’s food and stealing off in the middle of the night—and was that the Person in the Boots with him? Seems likely, since a clue he left advises those looking for him to look at the houseboat—and isn’t that where we first encountered the Person in the Boots?
The best eye-candy came when the Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) mowed down a herd of zombies with a cable strung between 2 cars, and the biggest thrills arrived at the tail end when we came face to face with a brand new band of survivors. Who are these kids?
And what the hell is Rick smiling about?
