Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead ended with Carl (played by Chandler Riggs) hiding in the back of one of The Savior’s vehicles with plans to assassinate Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) once they arrive at The Sanctuary. Carl had to grow up fast when the zombie apocalypse interrupted his childhood, but vitality doesn’t always equal longevity in the world of The Walking Dead. Could his burning need for vengeance lead him to a bloody beat-down from Negan and his barbwire-wrapped bat Lucille? Some fans think so.
In the comic, Carl Grimes is still alive and well, and part of an important and compelling story arch. So why would anyone think he’s about to bite the dust? Because Chandler Riggs has college aspirations; he announced the news via Twitter, including a recent acceptance.
ayy i just got accepted into auburn

It’s not impossible to imagine Riggs being a college student and a Walking Dead cast member; he wouldn’t be the first young actor to balance work and education, and Auburn University is less than 2 hours away from Atlanta, where the series is filmed. There are, however, other clues that suggest things may be wrapping up for poor Carl.
A photo of Riggs with his father, recently posted to Facebook, announces the completion his 7-year contract with AMC, and includes what many have interpreted as an early goodbye: “So grateful to AMC, cast and crew, and the amazing fan base for making the little zombie show a big deal!”
Perhaps most telling, however, is a hashtag on an Instagram post Riggs made (of the same picture with his father): #freedom.
So what do you think? Does Riggs’ college aspirations and #freedom hashtag signal an eminent demise for Carl Grimes? Sound off in the Comments section!
