Official Synopsis: The movie Mother! is an odd one and unfortunately, one many people avoided due to the negative reviews by professional critics and average moviegoers. To get the most out of the “Experience” of watching Mother! you really need to understand what you’re watching first, especially if you’ve not been interested in it based on what you’ve heard. In this episode of “How to Watch” we’ll be explaining what to know before you watch with no spoilers, then more you should know before watching with mild spoilers. Finally, we’ll dive deep into some of the larger themes seen towards the end of the film.
How to watch Mother!: You must first understand the entire film is a metaphor. This is obvious for some but because of the huge cast and how the movie was marketed, a lot of audience goers didn’t tap into this early enough while watching. Knowing this alone will help you understand the meaning of Mother! as you watch.
Digging a little deeper, (*spoiler) it might help on first viewing to know that it’s a Metaphor for God and Mother Earth. This becomes very obvious but if you catch onto it late in the film, you miss a lot of important things early on and the chaos that is “Mother!” is almost too much to watch without the proper context.
Eventually, the metaphor begins to beat you over the head, till it hurts, which is the weakness of the film. For Jennifer Lawrence mother is a journey through time as God’s counterpart/companion. We follow her as God takes in humanity with all its faults with wide open arms. This particular metaphor works incredibly well because in Mother Jennifer Lawrence is the main character and we empathize with her. Even though we are human, we are put in a position where we question God’s unconditional love for Man. It’s an interesting position to be in, at least and one that’s well worth the 2-hour run time.
The Mother ending explained how Mother Earth’s wrath will eventually consume humanity and all of her creation. Given the circumstances she’s put in throughout the movie, I think we can all understand why.
