This isn’t new, but with so many David Lynch fans feeling a great emptiness following the conclusion of Twin Peaks: The Return, I thought this might help soothe the longing. Fans of the complex, experimental filmmaker know that, back in 1981, Lynch was approached by George Lucas about directing Return of the Jedi. Of course, he politely declined the offer, but fans of Lynch and Star Wars have often wondered what a Lynch-helmed Jedi would have looked like, had it come to fruition.
Filmmaker Samuel C. Spitale teamed up with digital FX artist Tyler Ham to bring an interpretation of Return of the Jedi as directed by David Lynch to life. Culled from the film itself and peppered with iconic Lynch characters and imagery (not to mention a dash of backward speak), it’s an amazing “what if?” manifested—with surprisingly poignant results.
