Official Synopsis: Jaws is widely considered one of the best thrillers ever made, but it almost never happened at all. From budget problems to cast feuds and Oscar snubs, we’re diving deep into the waters of a movie that started with notorious production problems but finished with rave reviews, three Academy Awards, and a whole bunch of cash. Here’s the untold truth of Jaws…
The script wasn’t even finished when filming began.
The decision to actually shoot in the ocean (as opposed to a tank on a Hollywood set) led to innumerable, unexpected complications.
The shark was just one of many production obstacles that threatened to sink Jaws before the production was even completed. For example, the film went way over budget and 100 days over schedule; many involved with the film predicted the studio would pull the plug.
Like their characters, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw did not get along in real life; stories of an open feud were infamous.
During the scene where Quint (Shaw) drunkenly recalls the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, the actor was actually intoxicated, so much so that he had to be carried onto the boat for shooting.
The line “We’re gonna need a bigger boat” was adlibbed by Roy Scheider during filming.
His horrible experiences with the production are why Steven Spielberg wasn’t involved with any of the Jaws sequels.
Spielberg has long felt snubbed by the Academy Awards for not being nominated for a Best Director Oscar for Jaws.
