1999’s Lake Placid is an under-sung horror comedy that’s as about as entertaining as any movie should be allowed. The reoccurrence of Betty White gleefully feeding cows to her prehistoric pet and the ensemble trio of Bridget Fonda, Bill Pullman, and Oliver Platt slays (pun intended)! And when the helicopter shows up, well, you just know something epic is about to happen.

While hardly equal, the Lake Placid sequels released in 2007 and 2010 at least attempted to maintain the dark comic roots of the original. The upcoming installment, Lake Placid Legacy, however—not so much. It’s clearly a complete reboot that trades camp for straight-up horror. Have a look-see:
Official Synopsis: Taking place several years after the events of the original film, Legacy finds the team of young explorers out to reveal the secrets of an area removed from modern-day maps and hidden behind electric fences. However, once they reach the center of the lake, they discover an island that harbors an abandoned facility with a horrific legacy: the island is home to a deadly predator eager to feast on those dumb enough to ignore the warnings. But before they can turn back, our hapless heroes get dragged into a battle for their lives — and will need to work together if they hope to survive.
Lake Placid Legacy is directed by Darrell Roodt and stars Katherine Barrell, Tim Rozon, and Luke Newton. The film premieres on Syfy this Labor Day, May 28th at 9 pm.
