Super Dark Times was one of the best-received horror movies of 2017, appearing on many year-end Top 10 lists. Described as a mix of Donnie Darko and Stand by Me, it presents adolescence as a perilous minefield of potentially fatal encounters. Coming of age is a process as hazardous as living in a jungle. The story is relatively straightforward, involving two teenage boys with a terrible secret and a young woman who they both find irresistible.
Warning: Below There Be Spoilers!
Now that Super Dark Times is on Netflix, and therefore subject to the scrutiny of legions of horror fans, a theory has emerged suggesting Allison (played by Elizabeth Cappuccino) was more than merely a bystander to unspeakable events and far from the unfortunate center of a volatile, hormone-fueled love-triangle. Rather she was the puppet-master of the film’s ultimate atrocities.
While her involvement in the accidental slaughter of Daryl (played by Max Talisman) could have only been peripheral and incidental, director Kevin Phillips establishes Allison as fascinated with blood and death, unable to look away from an injured deer being put down. Once an obsession was sparked, the theory postulates, she used the obvious tension between Zach (Owen Campbell) and Josh (Charlie Tahan) to orchestrate the film’s shocking climax (from which she slyly emerged as a Super Dark Time’s “final girl”).
If you think this theory is a stretch, the video below from The AtZ Show will break it down courtroom-style in order to make a compelling case. If nothing else, it might inspire you to re-watch the film with a fresh perspective.
