Eugene (played by Josh McDermitt), the mullet-sporting savant on The Walking Dead, is on quite a few fans’ shit lists. We’ve always taken him with a grain of salt, ever since it was first revealed that his claims of being an important scientist were lies he made in order to survive; it was loathsome, if understandable, strategy for a scaredy-cat living in the zombie apocalypse.
But his actions upon being kidnapped by Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan) and his Saviors were downright deplorable; after a short initiation in this season’s Episode 11, Hostilities and Calamities, Eugene seemed to relish his new position as one of Negan’s chosen inner circle. Of course, we want to give him the benefit of the doubt, imagining he’s only playing the brown-noser in order to survive his involuntary relocation.
But his refusal to accept rescue from Sasha (Sonequa Martin) and Rosita (Christian Serratos) at the end of Sunday’s episode, The Other Side, has us thinking the worst about the cowering bombast. Pictures just released for next Sunday’s episode (Something They Need), however, have us wondering if Eugene will at least tempt some sort of personal redemption.
One picture shows Sasha in what looks like the same holding cell Daryl (Norman Reedus) spent countless painful hours within (I can hear “Easy Street” already); another shows Eugene on the other side of the door with a penitent /conflicted expression on his face. An interesting detail in the latter pic is the stuffed animal in Eugene’s pocket.
We remember Eugene snatching the toy in Episode 11 (along with a flyswatter and a bedpan) but didn’t give it much thought at the time. Now, some fans (like me) are wondering if he’s got something hidden within that cute little stuffed monkey. Could it contain Eugene’s suicide pills, or has he turned the whole thing into a bomb? One thing’s for certain, in a show as detail-oriented as TWD, it has to mean something!
What do you think? Does Eugene have something up his sleeve or has he truly gone full-Negan? Is the stuffed monkey an important clue, or just a curious distraction? We’ll find out on Sunday! Check out the trailer, synopsis, and additional pictures for Something They Need below.
