Mike Flanagan is fast becoming one of the 21st Century’s bona fide Masters of Horror. His impressive filmography includes Oculus, Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and Gerald’s Game. His most recent offering, Before I Wake, was slated for theatrical release in 2017 but was pulled in the 11th hour and replaced with The Disappointment Room.
Before I Wake finally arrived in the US via Netflix in January, and it’s already a frontrunner for best horror movie of 2018. Though more of a fairy tale for adults, viewers will find echoes of Andy Muschietti’s Mama. And while many aspects of the film are thoroughly explained, Before I Wake leaves many questions unanswered.
