Laura Dern features prominently on the upcoming Twin Peaks-themed cover for Variety, as well as a video interview she participated in with franchise star Kyle Maclachlan and series mastermind David Lynch. While Dern has worked with Lynch on past feature films Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart, she was not part of the original Twin Peaks cast. Twin Peaks Wiki, however, assures us that “she is to appear in a ‘top-secret pivotal role’.”
Said Revival begins on May 21st on Showtime, meaning we’re so close I can practically taste the pie and damn fine coffee. Have a look at the interview and the Variety cover below.
Dern’s prominence in the new Variety features has fans hypothesizing she will be playing Agent Cooper’s most trusted confidant: His singled-monikered secretary Diane. We never saw Diane in person back in the 1990s (or even heard her voice); rather, Coop communicated with her exclusively via taped dictations. In Episode #1.1, the character states:
“I have been assigned a secretary. Her name is Diane … She seems an interesting cross between a saint and a cabaret singer.”
That certainly sound like a part Dern could be playing. Whether or not the Diane Theory pans out, however, remains to be seen.
Official Synopsis: Directed entirely by David Lynch, the new SHOWTIME 18-part limited event series picks up 25 years after the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town were stunned when their homecoming queen Laura Palmer was shockingly murdered. TWIN PEAKS is written and executive produced by series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost and is executive produced by Sabrina S. Sutherland.
