When The Walking Dead returns this Sunday for Episode 5 of Season 8, it’ll be a return to The Sanctuary, which is currently under siege by a coalition of communities and a horde zombies. It’s make-it-or-break-it time for Negan (played by Jeffery Dean Morgan) the charismatic yet violent leader who maintains control over his people and resources with an iron fist.
Negan isn’t just the greatest villain we’ve met on The Walking Dead, he’s one of the most compelling and disturbing antagonists ever created; a uniquely terrifying tyrant who’s nonetheless extremely likeable—as long as you stay on his good side. While we don’t know much about who Negan was before we met him at the end of Season 6, the character has been thoroughly fleshed in the comic book series the show is based on.

While the show and the comic do contain notable differences, knowing who Negan was before the zombie apocalypse, and how he became the leader of The Saviors, is an engrossing yarn that will definitely add to your understanding of the man’s core moralities, driving impulses, and even his fears. From his life as an adulterous husband and high school gym teacher to his acquisition of the bat “Lucille” and his rise to power, the video below lays Negan bare.
While this backstory is obviously full of spoilers, the video does not reveal anything beyond the show’s current timeline, meaning it won’t spoil the ending of All-Out War or the impending time jump.
