We previously reported that a 4-minute trailer for Andrés Muschietti’s IT, one featuring material not yet released online, would be shown in advance of Annabelle: Creation, which arrives in US Theaters today. Having just returned from Creation, I can confirm that the rumors are true—and the trailer for IT is phenomenal.
If you’re looking forward to seeing IT, hitting US Theaters on September 8th, knowing as little as possible (or if you’re planning to see Annabelle: Creation this weekend), skip this article and check out the next one. If you can’t wait to know what’s in store then read on, my friends, read on!
The trailer opens with Stephen King talking about how happy he is to see IT getting a theatrical adaptation, as seeing the story play out on big screens has been a dream for the best-selling author. What follows is the iconic scene of Georgie (Jackson Robert Scott) meeting Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) after losing his paper boat down the storm drain.
While each trailer released so far has included cuts of this scene, the trailer accompanying Annabelle: Creation shows it in its entirety, allowing the moment to build to a point of legitimate terror.
Before Georgie takes off with his boat, he turns to his house and waves at his brother Bill (Jaeden Lieberher); Bill cautions Georgie to “Be careful” through his walkie-talkie. We then see him take his time racing his boat down the gutters; the scene unfolds naturally and we really feel the youngster’s joy. He almost catches his boat before losing it down the storm drain, at which point he laments, “Bill’s gonna kill me!”
Enter Pennywise! Yes, he speaks! For those wondering if Skarsgård would play the role with a comic slant like Tim Curry did in the 1990’s miniseries, or if he’d be playing a more sinister manifestation of evil, the answer is: Yes—to both! Pennywise charms Georgie with stories of the circus; they bond over their shared love of popcorn. Georgie seems almost ready to accept the clown’s invitation to visit the show when Pennywise’s face betrays his insidious intentions. Georgie is immediately taken aback.
“Well, I’d better be going,” Georgie tells Pennywise.
“Not without your boat?” Pennywise replies, “You said Bill would kill you if you came home without it” Georgie hesitates, but Pennywise continues to beckon, holding the S.S. Georgie just out of the boy’s reach. “Go on… Take it… Take it… Take it…” Georgie reaches closer… closer…. Closer…
