The Walking Dead’s 8th midseason finale will be talked about by fans for years to come and, though we’ve dealt with major character deaths in the past, this one is unique and especially devastating. If you haven’t seen the midseason finale yet, this is your last chance to avoid the shocking spoiler.
Though it seemed like the coalition of communities led by Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) had Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan) and his Saviors on the ropes, the tides turned (thanks to Eugene, played by Josh McDermitt, though specifics remain murky) and Alexandria has fallen. Making the loss all the more devastating is a last-minute reveal that Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) has been bitten by a walker.
Though we don’t see Carl die, showrunner Scott Gimple confirmed on Talking Dead that this is a “one-way ticket” for Carl, saying, “This will play out as past bites have played out”. This is a rare occasion, however, where we know in advance that death is inevitable. Will having a chance to say our goodbyes to Carl make his loss easier to endure or prolong the agony?
